Equanimity and Sonder

Paintings by Luke Mizer

These paintings arise from a place of quiet observation.
Equanimity—a grounded inner calm—and sonder—the quiet realization that everyone has a rich, complex inner life—are the emotional undercurrents of this work. Equanimity and Sonder explores the balance between feeling rooted in oneself and being moved by the depth and presence of others.

In the studio, I trust the process—and my body—to guide me. One mark leads intuitively to the next as layers slowly unfold. I play with organic forms, texture, vastness, and the spaces in between.

Inspiration often arrives unexpectedly—from the framing of a film scene, the lyrics of a song playing in the background, or the emotional weight of a quiet moment. There’s a quiet joy in how these works bring beauty, mystery, and emotional richness into refined, elegant spaces.

Abstract art holds a cinematic quality for me. I want these paintings to feel big—as big as I feel. I want them to evoke vastness and softness, and to tap into that childlike sense of awe.

As an advocate for mental health, I believe in the transformative power of creativity. Through color, texture, and mark-making, I create powerful yet welcoming experiences that invite viewers to explore with curiosity and compassion.

I’m fascinated by the interplay of light and dark—not as opposites, but as complementary forces that shape our inner landscapes. Each piece is an invitation into that dance, where illumination and shadow ignite the imagination.

In a fast, overstimulated world, I hope these works offer a moment to pause—to breathe, to reflect, and to reconnect with both yourself and the world around you.

Ultimately, I see myself as an artist of life. Whether through painting, photography, or storytelling in film, my work reflects how I observe, feel, and connect with the world.
Equanimity and Sonder is both a personal journey and an open invitation: to look closer, feel more deeply, and find stillness amid complexity.
